The definition of alternative fuel varies according to the context of its usage. In the context of petroleum substitutes, the term 'alternative fuel' can imply any available fuel or energy source, and does not necessarily refer to a source of renewable energy. In the context of environmental sustainability, 'alternative fuel' often implies an ecologically benign renewable fuel.

Alternative fuels, also known as non-conventional fuels, are any materials or substances that can be used as a fuel, other than conventional fuels. Conventional fuels include: fossil fuels (petroleum (oil), coal, propane, and natural gas), and also in some instances nuclear materials such as uranium. Some well known alternative fuels include biodiesel, ethanol, butanol, chemically stored electricity (batteries and fuel cells), hydrogen, methane, natural gas, vegetable oil, biomass, and peanut oil. Saab Managing Director Jan-Åke Jonsson said that the 9-1 will be built at Saab’s home plant in Trollhättan and will be built on the same platform as the next-generation Opel Astra. Saab intends to build the vehicle at their Trollhättan factory, but also other European GM factories have been mentioned. It will be the successor of the Saab 90 and Saab 99 and be the company’s entry-level car as the 9-3 grows larger. It’s intended to compete with BMW 1 Series, Volvo C30, Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Acura CSX and Audi A3 - hatchback versions may be followed by sedan and station wagons, which may also appear for the 1 Series.
